TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorders)

TMJ stands for temporal-mandibular joint.  Temporal, as in the temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; joint as in where the head and jaw meet.  Problems in this joint may be caused by misalignment of the teeth, trauma, or excess muscle tension.  Aside from the two bones that meet here, cartilage buffers them and five muscles are involved in the area.  TMJ problems can affect people of all ages.

TMJ syndrome symptoms include:
*Headaches
*Earaches, stuffiness, or ringing in the ears
*Pain or soreness in and around the jaw joints
*Clicking or popping of the jaw
*Pain in the jaw muscles
*Neck, shoulder or back pain

Left untreated, the TMJ symptoms increase in number and severity as you age.

In order to determine the best course of treatment, an accurate diagnosis is imperative.  Consult with Dr. Jungblut to determine if you are suffering from TMJ syndrome.  Many times all that is needed is a simple adjustment to your bite (the way your teeth come together), or a small mouthpiece that corrects the way your jaw joint closes.
